Caring-"...I am so terribly sorry that this should happen..."
Responsible-"...I suppose it is really my fault..."
who is she caring towards?
The woman is:
Furious:took hold of the little man by the lapels of his white suit and began to shaking him very vigorously,talking to him fast,loud and fiercely.
Responsible:'I am so terribly sorry that this should happen.'....'I suppose it is really my fault.'
Greedy:I can see it now,that hand of hers;it had only one finger on it, and a thumb.

The characteristics of woman
Crazy:She is crazy because she is willing to let someone cut off their fingers.
Kind-hearted:She is kind-hearted because she is willing to take care of a mad person.
Honest:She is honest because she told the american sailor the truth that his husband is a lunatic.
Pitiful:She is pitiful because she was force to see her lunatic husband.
responsible; she say sorry to the boy for his hushand ( the oldish man ) of his wrong doing as it was his husband fault.
furious: she shout and scold his husband of what he had done.

I think the Man's wife is really kind and responsible, she's kind as she is willing to take care of the man eventhough he have mental problem and she is also responsible as she told the American sailor the truth that she did not take good care of the man and letting him have another bet again, which may cause somebody to lost a finger.
Caring
+ even though, his husband "s a lunatic, she still stays with him.
Self sacrificing
+ she sacrificed her fingers for the her husbands cars to protect others from his lunacy.
the woman is:
caring toward the Carlos she brought him here because people down at their home threaten to put him away
Responsible-as she said it was really her fault for leaving the Carlos alone
The woman is caring as she is worried is anybody was hurt at that time.
She is responsible,she apologised to the American sailor for the doing of the "oldish man"

Do you think this was a willing act on her part? Crazy could also mean 'out of mind' - do you think she's not thinking at all, causing her fingers to be sacrificed?
She's KIND-HEARTED and HONEST. Yes, I agree to your comments :)
However, is PITIFUL a characteristic? hmm...

I think the old man wife is polite as she had explain why she stop the bet.
I think that she is also caring as she is willing to take care of the old man even though the old man is lunatic.

Impression on Man's wife.
I find her a quite [b]pitiful[/b] because in order to stop the man from betting again,hshe took a hard time to win all his stuff.And her hand is now onlt left with 1 finger and a thumb.
she is also very patient.
She took a lot of time to win all the things belonging to the old man but she still did not give up.
